Kung Fu Panda (2008)
IMDB – 7.6/10, Reviews
The adorable panda who can fight made a place right in our hearts when we saw him in action. This animated film is not only suitable for children but adults as well, who have plenty to laugh about. With recognizable voice actors and a compelling storyline, Kung Fu Panda has all the makings of a great experience. The plot is set in ancient China, the Valley of Peace, where harmony ensues.
But, as the town’s old foe Tai Lung escapes from prison, the “chosen warrior” must stand in the way of the prestigious Dragon Scroll. Po, a careless and chubby Panda, is chosen as the warrior. Po’s journey to find his true identity and realize his potential is the film’s plot.
Due to having such a goofy lead character, there are many hilarious scenes involving him. His innocence and playful nature combine well with the beautifully choreographed action sequences. And despite these overt comic elements, the film also has a satisfying emotional core.
The Dictator (2012)
IMDB – 6.4/10, Reviews
Sacha Baron Cohen has made a habit of doing the unthinkable. His bold shenanigans have constantly stirred controversy in real life. With ‘The Dictator,’ he continues his rich form. He plays the titular character, General Aladeen, who rules the Republic of Wadiya.
Despite having everything in life, Aladeen feels he lacks respect from the world. Consequently, he travels to the UNSC to deliver a speech but is kidnapped by a former employee. It is then revealed that one of Aladeen’s generals plotted to assassinate him.
While taking revenge, Aladeen hides his identity and starts working for Zoey, a free-spirited local producer. In the process, he falls in love with her and vows to make a good life for themselves.
The film has plentiful laughter to keep you hooked. The jokes range from slapstick-style comedy to political satire. Aladeen’s assuming personality makes sure that even the most innocuous events turn into humor for us. A must-watch if you like Sacha Baron and his binge-worthy comedy movies!
Annie Hall (1977)
IMDB – 8.0/10, Reviews
This Woody Allen film is a special one and somewhat different from others on the list. The way it is represented is unique, but the humor quotient is also relatable for adults. Annie Hall revolves around the titular character, who broke up with protagonist Alvy Singer some time back.
Through the fun times they shared, Allen takes us through a nostalgia ride about the ex we thought was the one. The joy that glows from Alvy and Annie is so pure; you can’t help but laugh. A few dark moments pepper the film, but not to the point of ruining the gay feel. This will be even more enjoyable if you’re a fan of Woody Allen!
Tropic Thunder (2008)
IMDB – 7.0/10, Reviews
If you feel the need to laugh like a child, watch ‘Tropic Thunder’ right now. This satire is a film that has flown under the radar for many years. However, this is a sure-shot blockbuster with an A-list cast, including Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, and Ben Stiller. It is an observant parody of the Vietnam War and how the US used its global dominance to its advantage.
The film is a callback to the Inception idea of a film inside a film. Distracted actors, while filming a movie, venture into the territory of a heroin factory. Carrying blank shots, they face the uphill task of staying alive in the real jungle. ‘Tropical Thunder’ is unique in how it alters genre tropes to come up with something fresh. The use of war allegory and various aspects of American race culture in clever ways sets it apart.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
IMDB – 7.9/10, Reviews
Taika Waititi’s storytelling in Hitler’s Germany from a child’s perspective will move you to tears. But, such is his genius that this will not be without big laughs along the way. The director himself plays a ghost-like figure of Hitler, who is a constant in Jojo’s ears as he navigates the tense political climate.
The depiction of the Young Nazi brigade benefits from the presence of comedy stalwarts like Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson. The authenticity in production values also stands out as something to savor. The movie ends on a note of hope and optimism, though, giving you fantastic memories once you finish it. It not only touches upon your need to laugh but also connects with an emerging voice in mainstream Hollywood.
Bala (2019)
IMDB – 7.3/10, Reviews
This Hindi movie starring Ayushman Khurana tackles a very sensitive stereotype for the male gender: middle-aged baldness. Often the victim of severe ridicule, young Bala regrets his childhood merry-making as he becomes one. The film also carries an emotional appeal against our inherent love for fair skin, especially in women.
Bala’s life story about the struggle against baldness takes an exciting twist as he meets Pari Mishra, a fair-skinned model. He is a fairness cream salesman. After he falls in love with her, they decide to marry. The only catch is: he never lets Pari know he is bald and wears a wig.
Like so many films on the list, ‘Bala’ has a healthy mix of moments that will choke you up and get you rolling on the ground. Khurana executes his role with a heartfelt sincerity that is seldom found in commercial cinema.
The film’s message about the meaning of beauty and life will surely win you over. Through the three lead characters, director Amar Kaushik captures three distinct but equally important views about victims of Indian society. This is a film to enjoy with friends and family without hesitation!
The Hangover (2009)
IMDB – 7.7/10, Reviews
One of the best American comedy movies to come out on OTT platforms is ‘The Hangover.’ The A-list cast includes Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms in lead roles. Todd Phillips, who most recently directed ‘Joker,’ helms the film about three best friends and an annoying cousin whose plans of an epic bachelor’s party go woefully wrong.
Three friends search for their friend on the wedding day, as the groom is missing. The recap of events of last night reveals male buffoonery at its best to give you plenty to laugh about.
Not only are the protagonists comical themselves, but they are also even better together. Their chemistry makes for memorable scenes, as they play off each other. There are hardly any dull moments to derail the momentum that the film gathers. It is one of the best comedy movies to binge-watch, along with the other installments in the franchise.
The Other Guys (2010)
IMDB – 6.7/10, Reviews
Aren’t Ferrel and Wahlberg the perfect buddy-cop duo? The genre that has seen classic pairings before generally leans towards a lighter vein, and that is the case here. The two actors play cops who have fallen out of favor and are looking to make amends.
They intend to disrupt a secretive ploy by a raging capitalist. Similar to the plot in ‘21 Jump Street’, ‘The Other Guys’ turns out to be a more wholesome experience than it seems. Despite the nature of its content, it manages to give a sensible story and two endearing characters who are pure at heart. An all-out fun movie you can watch anytime!
We’re the Millers (2013)
IMDB – 7.0/10, Reviews
This family comedy-drama became famous for all the wrong reasons. Will Poulter’s character was and remained the subject of memes for “that ” scene. Nonetheless, the film was such a big hit that a second part was commissioned and is yet to be released. The film is about four unrelated individuals assembled to carry out a mission for a drug dealer.
In the process, though, they find warmth in each other and stand up like a real family. The formulaic approach mainly works due to the great work by the cast and punchy one-liners. In addition, there is a lot of action in the film that has undertones of comedic elements in how they’re carried out.
April & the Extraordinary World (2015)
IMDB – 7.3/10, Reviews
The unique film on the list is this French masterpiece. Its distinct features betray commonplace knowledge about animation. The traditional confines within which movies in this format were made are ditched here. There are probably no other animation films quite like ‘April and the Extraordinary World’ that will challenge you.
Without being too straightforward, the film creates a great contrast between the world it makes and our reality. In addition, the visuals are stylized based on the works of cartoonist Jacques Tardi. This creates a further sense of atmosphere in your mind and improves the film’s cinematic appeal.
